20230227 Tracking
Conditions and observations were excellent on Monday February 27 during a tracking outing for WBFN members. Species identified by tracks and or sign included Eastern Cottontail, Red Squirrel, Eastern Gray Squirrel, Beaver, Raccoon, Coyote, Red Fox, Mouse sp, Great Blue Heron, Ruffed Grouse and American Robin. The Heron tracks were a real treat for everyone but it was hard to imagine that this bird was enjoying wading through the snow looking for a meal in the creek. It just seemed so early for a Great Blue Heron! Another interesting find was the kill site with feathers from a Northern Flicker. Birds were in abundance and the species count submitted via eBird was seventeen for birds that were seen or heard. Highlights included Brown Creeper, Cedar Waxwing and White-throated Sparrow. The Winter Wren previously observed on February 26th was not observed during the outing.
